Aker Yards is a
Norway-based, international
shipbuilding company with 18
shipyards in
Norway,
Finland,
Germany,
Romania,
Brazil,
France,
Ukraine and Vietnam. The company is the largest shipbuilding company in
Europe and the fourth largest in the
World. The company has three business areas: Cruise & Ferries, Merchant Vessels and Offshore & Specialized Vessels. Aker Yards was split from its mother company Aker ASA, controlled by
Kjell Inge Røkke and also listed on
Oslo Stock Exchange in
2004.
In April 2006, Aker Yards bought Alstom Marine, Alstom's naval construction activities, with
Chantiers de l'Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire.
Aker Yards is now a publicly traded company on
Oslo Stock Exchange and was owned 40.1% by the
Aker Group until March 2007, when Aker ASA sold its shares, though remaining an important customer of Aker Yards. In October 2007,
STX Shipbuilding secured a 39,2% stake of Aker Yards, currently being the sole industrial owner of the group.
Operations
Cruise & Ferries
The
cruise &
ferries division constructs vessels at shipyards in Finland and France. The division had a revenue of NOK 11,178 million in 2006. Two 62000 gross ton ferries are to be built in Germany for
Stena Line, to be delivered in 2010.
Merchant Vessels
The
merchant vessels are produced at the yards in Germany, Romania, Ukraine and Norway. The division had a revenue of NOK 6,460 million in 2006.
Offshore & Specialised Vessels
The offshore and specialised vessel division produces its ships in Norway, Finland, and Brazil while hulls are often constructed in Romania. In 2008 a brand new shipyard in Vietnam is constructed to serve the Asian market. Ships made by this division include
field support,
subsea support,
Arctic vessels,
fishing vessels,
naval craft,
research vessels and
coast guard vessels. The division had a revenue of NOK 7,749 million in 2006.
Strategic areas
Aker Arctic Technology, with 25 employees in Finland, focuses on Arctic vessels. Aker Yards Marine, Projects, Solutions and Aker Design offer ship design services while Aker Yards Cabins makes 6,000 ready-made
cabins annually.
